Tallawah youth conference 2025
Conference Overview
Over the past few years, young people have expressed heightened concern regarding their social-emotional experiences, worries about their future, and indecision regarding their purpose. Youth have identified managing their mental health as a significant stressor for them. Social isolation and struggles to maintain friendships, explore their world, and meet new people are intertwined with these difficulties. Furthermore, Black and racialized youth encounters with anti-Black racism and systemic oppression have added a layer of challenge that has led youth to question their identities and their place within their world. The Tallawah: Youth Conference is a transformative event designed to empower youth by amplifying their voices and providing a platform for advocacy, leadership, and community engagement. By bringing together youth from diverse backgrounds, the conference aims to create a supportive space where participants can share their experiences, learn from one another, and build a network of peers and mentors committed to positive change.
Key Goals:
Our conference is centred around the following primary objectives:
- Curate supportive spaces: Connect youth with mentors and other youth with similar interests, passions, and experiences. Strengthen youth’s concepts of community, and build a supportive network. Reinforce spaces where youth feel they belong, and can experience connection with others. The conference’s small group sessions aim to bring youth together in a supportive space.
- Cultivate cultural joy and pride: Cultivate spaces for youth to experience joy with each other and in their experiences. Create opportunities for youth to encounter cultural pride, and invest in their culture, their identity, and their social experiences. The conference aims to showcase youth performances, music, and expressive arts.
- Foster leadership skills: Reinforce leadership skills such as healthy communication, self-advocacy, managing stress, and emotional regulation. The conference aims to inspire, motivate, and guide participants to adopt new skills through interactive workshops and engaging speakers.

Empowering youth leaders at the tallawah youth Conference
The conference will aim to inspire and empower Durham Youth to engage in many meaningful conversations pertinent to their lives and community. These conversations will be initiated by the youth, as well as many empowering Black voices, including community leaders and keynote speakers. With much uncertainty for the future of the youth population, we want to use this opportunity to discuss the challenges youth may face on a day-to-day basis. These challenges may include a search for self-identity, mental health, and addictions, financial pressures, as well as many persistent conflicts within communities. Being youth-led, Ifarada: Center for Excellence and Kujipenda Cultural Center have collaborated for the organization of Tallawah Youth Conference, a Youth Leadership & Empowerment event.
